Born in France into a Jewish family of merchants. Leon Blum studied philosophy and law. The political turmoil of the late 1900's, and especially the Dreyfus affair brought him to the Socialist Party and in 1920 he became leader of the Party. In 1936 he became the first Jewish and the first Socialist Premier of France when he headed the Popular Front government. Leon Blum, who was condemned to spend the evening of his life languishing in a cell at the order of the Vichy upstarts, upheld the finest traditions of 19th-century French Liberalism. Highly cultured and progressive, he fought gallantly to preserve human values as he understood them. But he was also a proud Jew who never turned his back on his own people. He became a warm friend of Zionism and an admirer of Jewish achievements in Palestine. It was only fitting that Jewish pioneers, to whom the welfare of their people and the progress of mankind was equally dear, should erect a living and lasting monument to this great Jewish son of France, and so we did by naming our Kibbutz - Kfar Blum.
